We all have forgotten how to relax due to our hectic life style. Even during sleep, we do not relax completely. In Sivananda Yoga system, a great emphasis is given for relaxation. The class begins and ends with relaxation, and relaxation is also interspersed throughout the session.

During a yoga session, we work on the muscles and this produces lactic acid that will cause fatigue. But when we do relaxation, it decreases fatigue and lactic acid build up in the muscles.

Savasana (Corpse Pose)

Lie down on the back with feet at least 2 feet apart and arms a little away from the body with palms facing up and fingers curled. No energy should be expended in this position. Concentrate on exhalations as abdomen sinks. In good relaxation, the energy flows from the back of the head to toes and not the other way around. Savasana helps to reduce stress, relaxes the body and cures head ache, insomnia.

Balasana (Child Pose)

Sit on the heels with knees and feet together. Rest the hands on the ground with palms facing up beside the feet. Keep the forehead on the floor. Breathe gently with abdomen out during inhalation and abdomen in for exhalation.

(Lying down on abdomen)

Lie down on abdomen, place one hand on top of the other, turn the head to one side and rest one cheek on the hands. Breathe deeply with abdomen pressing into the floor during inhalation and rise during exhalation. Keep the eyes closed.
